WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Ebola preparedness is getting some mixed reviews in a new poll. The Associated Press-GfK poll finds a lack of confidence among Americans that their local hospitals can safely handle a patient. But the respondents also say the broader U.S. health care system will be able to prevent Ebola from spreading in this country. Most Americans say the U.S. also should be doing more in West Africa.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Authorities in Canada say they think they'll learn more in days to come about a 32-year-old petty criminal-turned convert to Islam who shot and killed a soldier guarding a war memorial before being fatally shot inside Ottawa's Parliament building. The second deadly attack in three days has raised worries about reprisals for joining the fight against the Islamic State group.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Authorities say the White House fence apparently proved too tempting for a 23-year-old Maryland man, who didn't get far after scaling it last night. Uniformed Secret Service agents and their dogs quickly converged on the unarmed man and took him into custody. The incident came about a month after a previous fence jumper carrying a knife got into the White House.

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Eight Shiite Muslims traveling in a minibus have been killed by gunmen in southwestern Pakistan. Police say the Shiites from the minority Hazara community were targeted by four gunmen riding two motorcycles outside the vegetable market on the outskirts of Quetta city. Six men died in the minibus and two others were chased down and shot.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — For the well-heeled who wish to combine tourism with a little touch-up, Dubai is a rising star. The luxury-filled emirate is now racing ahead to dominate the Middle East's plastic surgery market with plans to attract half a million medical tourists in six years. Beirut used to be tops in the region but violence in Syria spilling into Lebanon has changed that.
