PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Museum of Art is hosting the first major exhibit in 50 years devoted to the work of 20th century American photographer Paul Strand.
The show marks the debut of more than 3,000 black-and-white prints by Strand that the museum has acquired.
Strand's work takes viewers from the streets of New York in the 1910s to the post-war struggles of a small Italian village in the 1950s to the emerging democracy in Ghana in the 1960s.
Museum director Timothy Rub says Strand believed photography could reveal the essence of the human experience in a changing world. His work captures the human struggle, be it economic, political or personal.
The show opens Tuesday and runs through Jan. 4. The exhibit then moves to Switzerland, Spain and England.
