KANSAS CITY (AP) — The Royals and Athletics jump start baseball's post season play this evening. For Kansas City, this is the first trip to the playoffs in 29 years, while for Oakland this marks the third straight year in the post season. Jon Lester will be on the mound for the visiting Athletics against James Shields.
UNDATED (AP) — Two Major League clubs made news yesterday in regards to their managers. In Minneapolis, the Twins announced the firing of Ron Gardenhire after 13 seasons and in Houston the Astros named A.J. Hinch their new manager. He replaces Bo Porter, who was fired just under a month ago.
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Dennis Allen has been fired as coach of the Oakland Raiders. He leaves the team with a record of 0-4. The Raiders have had 11 straight seasons without a winning record or a playoff berth.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs walked all over the New England Patriots last night, beating the Bill Belichick (BEHL'-ih-chik)-coached team 41-14. Jamaal Charles returned from an injury to rush for 92 yards and score three touchdowns. Chiefs' quarterback Alex Smith threw for 248 yards and three scores in the win. The 27-point loss is the highest by the Patriots under Belichick since a 31-0 setback at Buffalo in 2003.
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Former Brooklyn Dodgers outfielder George "Shotgun" Shuba (SHOO'-bah) has died at age 89. He was best known for offering a congratulatory handshake to minor league teammate Jackie Robinson after Robinson had hit a home run. A photograph of the moment became famous and was dubbed, "A Handshake for the Century." Shuba reportedly hung a copy in his living room.
