SALT LAKE CITY — It will be up to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office to decide if any charges will be filed in the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man at a party over the weekend.
Cesar Gaxiola was shot in the head about 4:30 a.m. Sunday. He died from his injuries Sunday afternoon. Police believe he was at a house party that spilled onto the sidewalk in the area of 600 South and 900 East.
Salt Lake Police Sgt. Robin Heiden confirmed Monday that two guns were recovered at the crime scene by detectives. The shooter was still at the scene and cooperated with police.
After being interviewed for several hours by investigators, who also talked to several other witnesses, the man was released without being arrested. The district attorney's office will likely be asked now to decide whether the fatal shooting was a case of self defense.
Police said Sunday they do not believe the shooting was gang-related or drug-related.
Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
