BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgium is joining the U.S.-led coalition to fight the Islamic State group in Iraq. The Belgian government decided today to send six F-16s to take part in the airstrikes. British lawmakers today have also been considering whether to add to the airpower.
CHICAGO (AP) — More than 850 flights have been canceled in and out of Chicago today -- and many more cancellations are expected nationwide. It's because of a fire this morning at an air traffic control facility in suburban Chicago. Authorities say the blaze was intentionally set by a contract employee of the Federal Aviation Administration, and that there are no ties to terrorism. The suspect was found in the basement, where the fire began, with a self-inflicted wound. He's been taken to a hospital.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are posting modest gains today, after some positive news on the economy. As measured by gross domestic product, the economy grew at a 4.6 percent annual rate in the second quarter of the year. The upward revision was driven by new-found strength in business investment, which grew at an annual rate of 9.7 percent during the quarter.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration wants to put a stop to excessive payday or car title loans for military service members. The Defense Department is trying to close legal loopholes that have put hundreds of thousands of service members at risk of excessive fees. New rules would toughen the Military Lending Act's limits on interest rates for certain types of credit for service men and women and their dependents.
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A teacher who spent just a month in prison for the rape of a 14-year-old student is going back to court today to be resentenced. The original judge in the case was censured over comments that placed some responsibility on the victim. Stacey Rambold is seeking two years in state custody with another two years suspended for the 2007 rape of a freshman at Billings Senior High School. Prosecutors want a 10-year prison sentence with another 10 years suspended. The victim killed herself while the trial was pending.
