BEIRUT (AP) — Activists say women and children killed in the latest U.S.-led airstrikes in Syria were likely the wives and children of militants living in the target area. The attacks targeting Syrian oil installations held by the Islamic State group killed nearly 20 people. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says other airstrikes targeted the Nusra Front, an al-Qaida affiliate that has fought the Islamic State, and Syrian President Bashar Assad.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Turkey hasn't put forth any specifics, but U.S. officials say the country is moving toward joining its NATO allies and fellow Sunni Muslim nations in the fight against the Islamic State group. Turkey tends to resist being used as a launching pad for foreign troops. But Turkey also now faces a militant threat. The U.S. Embassy in Turkey has issued a security warning to U.S. citizens there.
PARIS (AP) — France's defense minister says the country is considering extending its air attacks against the Islamic State group into Syria and top military officials have a meeting Friday to discuss the French role. The minister also says the Muslim extremists who beheaded a French mountaineer in Algeria are being hunted by Algerian troops.
BOSTON (AP) — What happened in Boston will stay in Boston. A judge has rejected a defense motion to move the trial of the alleged Boston Marathon bomber to Washington. Judge George O'Toole says there's no reason to assume in advance that a fair jury cannot be selected. The judge did grant a delay in the start of the trial, which was scheduled to begin Nov. 3. It will now start Jan. 5.
PLACERVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire in northern California is still massive and has a price tag to match. Officials say the King Fire east of Sacramento has cost some $53 million to fight since it began nearly two weeks ago, making it the second priciest blaze in the state this year. A still-burning fire in Klamath National Forest along the California-Oregon border tops the list at $86 million.
