DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — A long-time benefactor to the University of New Hampshire is giving the school $10 million in scholarship support to students from the state.
The gift, announced Monday, is from Dana Hamel, who helped establish the Hamel Scholars and Hamel Scholarships Program in 2007 for students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and community involvement. The Hamels also donated money in 1996 to complete the Hamel Student Recreation Center and helped endow the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research in 2000.
UNH enrolls 16,000 students each year and nearly six in 10 are from New Hampshire. This gift is the largest in school history committed solely to in-state student support.
Hamel is currently an active investor and serves on the investment committee of the New Hampshire Historical Society and the UNH Foundation.
