PARIS (AP) — It could be a year before the Syrian rebel force that will likely be getting U.S. help in the fight against Islamic State militants is ready for action. That's according to Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. After meeting with his French counterpart in Paris today, Dempsey said it will take three or four months to begin the $500 million training program. It was approved by the House yesterday and sent to the Senate, where it had support from both parties.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council is calling the Ebola outbreak in Africa "a threat to international peace and security." And it's urging all countries to provide health experts, field hospitals and medical supplies to fight the rapidly accelerating spread of the disease. The resolution adopted unanimously today with an unprecedented 130 countries as co-sponsors reflected the rising global concern over the Ebola outbreak.
SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — The man charged with killing a Pennsylvania state trooper during an ambush has been added to the FBI's 10 most wanted list. Officials describe the suspect, 31-year-old Eric Frein (freen), as a self-taught survivalist who hates police. Police say they believe the shooter is still in the rural area where the attack occurred. Frein is accused of gunning down Bryon Dickson last week outside a barracks in the Pocono Mountains. Another trooper was wounded. Officers from around the country gathered today for Dickson's funeral.
NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. stock market is closing at record highs following another piece of good news on the economy. The S&P 500 is up nine points to finish at 2,011. The Dow gained 109 points to 17,265. Both of those are record levels. The Nasdaq composite jumped 31 points. The government reported today that fewer Americans filed first-time claims for unemployment benefits last week.
CAMINO (AP) — A fire captain in Northern California says "all bets are off" when it comes to the wildfire that has driven nearly 2,800 people from their homes east of Sacramento. The fire more than doubled its size overnight in what the fire official calls "extreme fire behavior." Meanwhile, authorities have charged a man with deliberately starting that fire. Wayne Huntsman is being held on $10 million bail.
