SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former assistant city attorney and his two adult sons who are accused of manufacturing a marijuana byproduct in a basement lab waived their right to an evidentiary hearing as their attorneys work with prosecutors on a plea deal. The Deseret News reports that prosecuting attorney Rob Neill said the case appears headed toward a resolution that would allow both sides to avoid trial.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A federal appeals court says a Utah man's freedom of speech was violated when he was convicted of a crime for sending a violent anti-immigrant poem to a University of Utah professor. Aaron Heineman says he has Asperger's syndrome, making it hard for him to understand social behavior and cues. The appeals court said the government should have to prove Heineman intended the professor to feel threatened.
BRIGHAM CITY, Utah (AP) — A Box Elder County Commissioner says he's going through counseling after pleading guilty to drunk driving last month. Commissioner Ryan Tingey pleaded guilty in August to a misdemeanor drunk driving charge. Tingey, a Republican, is not running for re-election this year. His four year term ends in December.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Clark County lawmakers declared a state of emergency in areas hit last week by flash flooding, and learned they'll receive $1.5 million in federal funds to help repair Interstate 15 northeast of Las Vegas. One lane of I-15 is open in each direction between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
