WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawmakers are lining up to support sending arms and providing training for moderate rebels in Syria in hopes they will fight Islamic State extremists. The Obama administration says the training operation is needed to establish credible, local ground forces to accompany U.S. air strikes against the terror group. It's expected there will be debate and a vote on the proposal.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings say they will let the courts decide if running back Adrian Peterson went too far while disciplining his child. Peterson's charged with a felony in Texas for allegedly causing unspecified injuries with a switch, a thin branch. Peterson said in a statement that he did not intend to cause injury.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The head of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the agency is sickened by rape allegations against a trooper arrested today. Three women say they were sexually assaulted by trooper Eric Roberts while he was on duty. Roberts' arrest comes just weeks after an Oklahoma City police officer was accused of sexually assaulting at least eight women while on duty.
GIRARD, Ill. (AP) — Fire officials say more than 130 Illinois middle school students and adults have been taken to hospitals today because of a carbon monoxide leak at a school in central Illinois. It happened in Girard, about 25 miles south of Springfield. The source of the leak at North Mac Intermediate School was a faulty furnace flue. Most of those transported have been released.
CHICAGO (AP) — United Airlines says it will offer flight attendants up to $100,000 in severance if they leave the company. United and the Association of Flight Attendants announced the deal today. United has 23,000 flight attendants. The airline says the early-outs will help it match staffing to its flight schedule and produce a labor contract with the union.
