WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is calling the slaying of British aid worker David Haines by Islamic State extremists a "barbaric murder" A video of Haines' beheading was posted online Saturday. Obama says the hearts of Americans go out to his family and the people of the U.K. and he says "The United States stands shoulder to shoulder tonight with our close friend and ally in grief and resolve."

BLOOMING GROVE, Pa. (AP) — The manhunt is intense for the person or persons who ambushed two Pennsylvania state troopers last night, killing one and wounding the other. State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan says Cpl. Bryon Dickson was killed and Trooper Alex Douglass was wounded outside the Blooming Grove barracks east of Scranton. He says Douglass is hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Coast guard officials say about 100 people have been rescued and two bodies recovered from a ferry that sank in rough seas after encountering steering trouble in the central Philippines. A Coast guard spokesman says search and rescue efforts will continue because it was uncertain how many people were aboard the ferry when it went down late Saturday.

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — Costa Rica's coast guard says it's recovered 1.5 tons of marijuana that officials say was thrown into the sea by smugglers being chased in the Caribbean early Friday. But the suspect boat, believed to be traveling from Jamaica to Panama, escaped its pursuers. Officials say the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration alerted Costa Rica to the suspicious vessel.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The Miss America contestants are continuing to wow people in Atlantic City and they showed off some fancy footwear on Saturday. The traditional "Show Us Your Shoes" parade featured 53 Miss America hopefuls riding down the boardwalk in convertibles, each sporting creatively decorated shoes to evoke their home state. The new Miss America will be crowned Sunday night in a nationally televised finale.
