BLOOMING GROVE, Pa. (AP) — Police say a person of interest is being questioned in an ambush shooting outside a Pennsylvania State Police barracks that left one trooper dead and another injured. The attack occurred during a shift change last night at the Blooming Grove barracks in a rural area east of Scranton.
CAIRO (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry says Egypt is an "important partner" in the emerging coalition aimed at beating back the extremist Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. During a visit to Cairo on Saturday, Kerry said that "as an intellectual and cultural capital to the Muslim world," Egypt has a "critical role" to play in denouncing the extremist group's harsh ideology. Kerry spoke after meeting today with Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi (AHB'-del fat-AH' el-SEE'-see).
LONDON (AP) — The family of a British aid worker believed to be held by Islamic militants in Syria has issued a public plea urging his captors to contact them. Extremists from the Islamic State group have threatened to kill 44-year-old David Haines, and his family said they have not received any reply from the group after repeated messages. Islamic State militants have beheaded two American journalists and posted the evidence online in videos. At the end of the last video, they threaten to kill Haines next.
LUHANSK, Ukraine (AP) — A convoy of more than 200 white trucks has crossed without permission from Russia into Ukraine to deliver humanitarian aid. A similar convoy in August was loudly condemned by Ukrainian officials as an invasion, but this time around they simply called the move "illegal." The convoy arrived as fighting flared up between pro-Russian rebels and government forces despite a cease-fire.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has turned himself in at a jail in Texas, to face charges that he used a branch to spank one of his sons. Peterson was processed and released early today, according to a jail records official who declined to give her full name, citing a department policy. The Vikings have benched Peterson for tomorrow's home opener against the New England Patriots.
