KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's prime minister says Russian President Vladimir Putin's ultimate goal is to "take the entire Ukraine." Speaking at a conference with in Kiev, Arseniy Yatsenyuk (ahr-SEHN'-ee yaht-sehn-YOOK') says his country is "still in a state of war" despite a cease-fire between the government forces and Moscow-backed rebels in the east. Meanwhile another convoy of Russian trucks said to be carrying humanitarian aid has rolled into Ukraine.
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Soldiers in Nigeria have won a rare victory over Islamic extremists who advanced on a town near the northeast city of Maiduguri. An officer and other witnesses say scores of militants were killed, including a feared Boko Haram commander. Boko Haram has recently taken a string of towns alongside Nigeria's northeast border with Cameroon in a campaign to create an Islamic caliphate, mimicking the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.
VALLETTA, Malta (AP) — More than 20 migrants are feared dead after a boat carrying them sunk 300 miles south east of Malta. Maltese and Italian vessels have been searching since a merchant ship rescued two migrants who said a total of 30 had been on board. One body has been recovered. The numbers of migrants fleeing conflicts and risking the perilous sea voyages from Libya to Europe has swelled this year.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Officials say Pakistani troops are doing everything they can to help people in the path of deadly, monsoon-generated flooding. Specialists have blown up dikes in central Pakistan to divert swollen rivers and save cities from raging floods that have killed nearly 500 people in Pakistan and the Himalayan region of Kashmir and affected over 2 million others.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The lawyer for star Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson says there's no timetable yet for his surrender after authorities in Texas issued an arrest warrant based on an indictment for child abuse. Peterson allegedly used a branch to spank his son. He was swiftly benched by his team for this weekend's game against New England.
