TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Democratic candidate in Kansas' Senate race is asking the state Supreme Court to remove his name from the ballot, a move designed to boost the chances of the independent candidate challenging longtime Republican Sen. Pat Roberts.

Democrat Chad Taylor filed a petition with the high court Tuesday. Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who oversees elections in the state, has refused to remove Taylor's name from the Nov. 4 ballot.

Taylor announced last week that he was ending his campaign to oust Roberts, a three-term incumbent, in a move that could bolster the chances of independent candidate Greg Orman.

Kobach, a Republican, says Taylor failed to comply with state election laws by not stating in his withdrawal letter that he was incapable of fulfilling the office's duties.
