ELKO, Nev. (AP) — A rural Nevada county will send a message the old-fashioned way to Washington about what it calls federal overreach on public lands: by horseback. Elko County Commissioner Grant Gerber says riders will begin the 2,800-mile relay ride at Point Reyes, California, around Sept. 26 and reach the U.S. Capitol about 20 days later. He told the Elko Daily Free Press multiple riders will carry commissioners' message that "regulation without representation is tyranny."
ELY, Nev. (AP) — Federal land managers say the number of bats killed by turbines at a wind farm in White Pine County is down sharply from a year ago. Paul Podborny of the federal Bureau of Land Management's Ely District Office says 23 bats have died at the Spring Valley Wind Farm so far this year compared with 103 bat deaths over the same time period last year. He told The Ely Times 533 bats in all were killed by the farm's wind turbines in 2013, triple the amount allowed by federal regulators.
INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service has decided to remove a dam at a drained lake in the Carson Range above Lake Tahoe's northeast shore and to restore wetlands at the site. Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson of the agency's Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit says removal of Incline Lake's dam will address public safety concerns and improve wetland habitat while providing recreational opportunities. In 2009, the Forest Service purchased a 777-acre parcel around Incline Lake, located along the Mount Rose Highway in Washoe County above Incline Village.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Reno-area public bus system workers and their employer have reached a tentative contract agreement. The Regional Transportation Commission announced the development in a statement Friday, saying it ensures there will be no service disruptions for riders. The RTC says negotiations have been assisted by a federal mediator, and the next step is for Teamsters Local 533 members to vote on the agreement. The previous agreement ended June 30 between the union and MV Transportation, the Texas-based contractor managing the system.
