TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — The U.S. military launched airstrikes Sunday around Haditha Dam in western Iraq. They are targeting Islamic State insurgents there for the first time in a move to prevent the group from capturing the vital dam. U.S. officials say that while the Anbar Province dam remains in control of the Iraqis, the American offensive was an effort to beat back militants who have been trying to take over key dams across the country.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An Iranian newspaper says authorities have arrested a Ukrainian national suspected of sabotage at the country's sole nuclear power plant. The report in the Hamshahri daily on Sunday says the "Ukrainian expert" was affiliated with a Russian contractor that works in Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, which went online in 2011 with Russian aid.

MARIPOSA, Calif. (AP) — An evacuation order has been lifted for most of the 300 homes near Yosemite National Park as firefighters made progress in fighting a wildfire in Central California. The California Department of Forestry and Protection says firefighters have now contained 60 percent of the 300-acre blaze. The fire broke out Friday afternoon, threatening 700 homes and five businesses.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — There's good news out of Ukraine. A cease-fire between government forces and Russian-backed rebels appears to be holding for the most part. That's the conclusion reached by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin. But the truce still appears fragile with both sides claiming violations.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church is joining other faiths in asking the Supreme Court to intervene and settle the question of whether states can outlaw gay marriage once and for all. Each of the faiths who have filed a friend-of-the-court brief teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman.
