MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — A commander of al-Shabab says the Somali extremist group has appointed a new leader. Earlier today, the group confirmed that its previous leader, Ahmed Abdi Godane, was killed in a U.S. airstrike on Monday. Somalia's national security minister is warning that al-Shabab is planning revenge attacks, possibly targeting medical and educational institutions.

CAIRO (AP) — Libya's former, Islamist-dominated parliament has sworn in a new government. The move comes a day before the country's other elected parliament is due to swear in a new Cabinet. The two parallel assemblies are loosely allied with warring militias battling in Tripoli and elsewhere. The Islamist factions were defeated in June elections but have refused to recognize the new parliament.

WASHINGTON — White House officials say President Barack Obama is abandoning his pledge to take executive action on immigration by the end of the summer and will delay any moves until after the November elections. The decision has infuriated immigration advocates. Cristina Jimenez of United We Dream says the decision is the latest in a series of "broken promises" from the president and congressional Democrats.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — The presidents of Ukraine and Russia say the cease-fire between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed rebels is mostly holding. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone today, and the Kremlin says there was "mutual satisfaction" that the combatants are "overall observing" the cease-fire. The truce still appears fragile, however, with both sides claiming violations.

LOS CABOS, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Norbert is producing heavy rains along Mexico's Baja California peninsula, prompting at least 2,000 people to leave their homes for higher ground. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Norbert has top winds near 115 mph. It's helping push moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly toward the southwestern United States, and forecasters say it could produce heavy rains there in coming days.
