NEW YORK (AP) — The S&P 500 is riding a string of 33 all-time highs this year. A surge in dividend-rich utility stocks helped push the index to a record yesterday. The S&P rose 10 points to 2,007, surpassing its previous record close of 2,003.37, set Aug. 29. The Dow Jones industrial average gained nearly 68 points to 17,137 on Friday and the Nasdaq ended up 20 1/2 points at 4,582.
NEW YORK (AP) — Now that the cease-fire between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists has removed some of the so-called fear premium, oil is continuing to drop. Yesterday, U.S. benchmark crude closed down $1.16, or 1.2 percent, to $93.29 a barrel in New York after falling $1.09 on Thursday, when a report showed that U.S. crude supplies fell less than expected.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says the August jobs report is another step forward in the nation's economic recovery. The economy generated only 142,000 jobs last month, falling short of economists' predictions. In the weekly White House radio and Internet address, Biden says warns that while job growth continues the wages of middle-class Americans are being left behind other indicators of economic growth. In the Republican address, the GOP candidate for Senate in Alaska, Dan Sullivan, says the federal government is an obstacle to progress in his state — and calls that a national problem, too.
UNDATED (AP) — Honda Motor Co. is recalling 126,000 motorcycles for a second time because their brakes can malfunction. The recall covers Honda's GL-1800 motorcycles for model years 2001-2010 and 2012. A problem with the secondary brake master cylinder can cause the rear brake to drag, potentially leading to a crash or fire. Honda has received more than 500 complaints, but there have been no reports of crashes or injuries as a result of the problem.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Organic and specialty crop growers are trying to make a living off the rising consumer interest in locally grown and organic foods. But pesticide drift is a serious concern for smaller farms that are often surrounded by conventionally grown crops that get sprayed with herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. Many growers are planting buffer strips, while 12 states now participate in a registry of organic and other farms to tip aerial and ground sprayers off to areas they need to avoid.
