CARROLLTON, Ga. (AP) — The University of West Georgia is planning later this month to honor the first black student to enroll at the school.
Lillian Williams began attending the school in 1963. It was then known as West Georgia College, and Williams also became the first black student to graduate from the school when she earned a degree in elementary education in 1967.
University of West Georgia President Kyle Marrero says Williams courageously pioneered integration at the school and it is proud to honor her.
The ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sept. 13 at the university's Ingram Library where an exhibit honoring Williams will be located. Williams' children also have established a scholarship in her name for mothers studying education.
