BRUSSELS (AP) — The situation in Ukraine is continuing worsen. The European Union is now warning that the apparent incursion of Russian troops on Ukrainian soil pushes the conflict closer to a point of no return. NATO estimates that at least 1,000 Russian soldiers are in Ukraine. Possible new sanctions against Moscow are now being drawn up in Brussels.

WASHINGTON (AP) — More U.S. airstrikes are being carried out against the Islamic State group in Iraq. The U.S. military says five recent airstrikes hit militant targets near Iraq's Mosul Dam. U.S. Central Command says the strikes destroyed an armed vehicle, a fighting position and weapons and damaged an Islamic State building. The U.S. has conducted a total of 115 airstrikes across Iraq.

BEIRUT (AP) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is strongly condemning a rebel attack on U.N. peacekeepers' positions in the Golan Heights and is demanding the "unconditional and immediate release" of all detainees. Al-Qaida-linked Syrian rebels are said to have surrounded the peacekeepers camp Saturday and ordered them to surrender. Other peacekeepers were able to flee from a different camp.

HAPPY CAMP, Calif. (AP) — Two big wildfires have now merged and are continuing to grow in far Northern California. The conflagration is threatening as many as 250 homes. The fires, both sparked by lightning nearly three weeks ago, are burning in the Klamath National Forest. More than 90 square miles have been charred.

BONANZA, Nicaragua (AP) — Rescue workers are still trying to reach five freelance miners still trapped in a Nicaraguan gold mine after a collapse Thursday morning. Twenty miners were freed late yesterday and two others made their way to safety shortly after the collapse. Officials say the rescued miners were a bit dehydrated but in good health and have been released from a hospital.
