BOSTON (AP) — American journalist Peter Curtis says he's "so touched and moved, beyond all words" by the people who've welcomed him home after he was held hostage in Syria for 22 months. Curtis was freed over the weekend by the Syrian extremist group al-Nusra Front, and he returned to the U.S. yesterday.

NEW HOPE, Minn. (AP) — Investigators are trying to gather information about the death of an American man believed to have been killed in Syria while fighting alongside the extremist militant group Islamic State. U.S. officials say it's unclear when Douglas McCain traveled to Syria. A cousin tells the Minneapolis Star Tribune that McCain "had strong Muslim beliefs," but Kenyata McCain says she didn't know that he supported Islamic State.

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) — A senior adviser to Sierra Leone's president says a third doctor has died from Ebola, marking a setback in the country's fight against the virulent disease. The doctor had been working at a clinic in the African country when he contracted the virus. News of his death came as an epidemiologist working in Sierra Leone was evacuated to Germany for medical treatment. He'd been doing surveillance work for the World Health Organization.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Experts working to identify the victims of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 say they've gathered DNA samples from 283 different people and have positively identified 173 of them. The experts in the Netherlands say all the DNA samples may not be from the 298 people who died when the plane was shot out of the sky over eastern Ukraine last month. They say some samples could be from people who gathered the remains in the area controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police in Philadelphia say a man who was abducted, repeatedly stabbed and tossed into the Schuylkill (SKOO'-kul) River early this morning was able to free himself and swim to shore. But two other people also abducted and stabbed were found dead in the river. The 20-year-old survivor says the two other victims were already in a van when he was thrown inside, robbed and stabbed. He says he doesn't know who the other victims were.
