NEW HOPE, Minn. (AP) — Those who knew him seem puzzled about the American man believed to have been killed fighting as a militant in Syria. A U.S. official says Douglas McAuthur McCain was most likely fighting alongside the Islamic State group. One relative says McCain had strong Muslim beliefs but she didn't think he supported Islamic State. She says McCain recently told her he was in Turkey. An acquaintance says he was good-hearted.
JERUSALEM (AP) — An ambiguous interim agreement to silence the guns in the Gaza Strip has Israelis and Palestinians wondering what was accomplished in 50 days of fighting. The cease-fire does appear to be holding, but the 3rd round of fighting since the Islamic militant group Hamas seized power in 2007 left more than 2,200 people dead, caused widespread destruction in Gaza and paralyzed large parts of southern Israel.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australian prime Minister Tony Abbot says a person of interest has already been intercepted since new counterterrorism units began working at the country's two largest airports last week. Abbott says the units will soon be introduced at all Australian international airports to monitor the movements of travelers on security watch lists. Some Islamic leaders argue Muslims are being unfairly targeted.
TORONTO (AP) — Canada says no members of its mobile laboratory team had contact with people in their Sierra Leone hotel who were diagnosed with Ebola. Canada is evacuating the three-member team after The World Health Organization earlier announced it is pulling a team out of the country. The Public Agency of Canada says the team will remain in voluntary isolation and be monitored closely.
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Even though they didn't do any shooting, three men are charged in California with the attempted murder of a policeman. The San Bernardino County district attorney's office says the men were with the gunman and knew about an AK-47 he fired during the confrontation. Officer Gabriel Garcia remains in critical condition. His rookie partner killed the gunman.
