NEW YORK (AP) — Two-time defending champion Serena Williams takes to the court tonight for her opening match at the U.S. Open. Her opponent will be fellow American Taylor Townsend. The 18-year-old, who is appearing in just her third Grand Slam tournament, is a wild card entry to the Open.
CINCINNATI (AP )— Major League Baseball has several 15-game winners but so far nobody has won No. 16. That could happen tonight as Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto (KWAY'-toh), who is 15-7, faces off at home against the Cubs. Cueto enters the game with an outstanding earned run average of 2.20, second best in the National League.
UNDATED (AP) — The lead in the American League West is shared by Oakland and Los Angeles. The Athletics regained a share of first with an 8-2 win last night over Houston. At the same time the Angels lost sole possession of the top spot with a 7-1 loss to Miami.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The quarterback of the fifth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes undergoes season-ending surgery today. The man in question is Braxton Miller, who tore the labrum in his right shoulder a week ago. Coach Urban Meyer is now forced to go with redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett behind center.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have named Matt Cassel (KAS'-uhl) as their starting quarterback. Coach Mike Zimmer made the decision that puts the veteran ahead of rookie Teddy Bridgewater.
