(KSL News) One of the oldest newspapers in the West is celebrating its 156th birthday today.
On this day in 1850, the Deseret Morning News, the oldest registered business in Utah, printed its first edition on a small hand press in the adobe territorial mint building in Salt Lake City.
In that first edition of the "News," the U.S. Senate was debating the dissolution of the Union. And a terrible fire in San Francisco had caused millions of dollars in damage.
Back in those days, Utahns could buy the paper with food items such as flour, wheat, butter or cheese.
