FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Attorney General Eric Holder is due in Ferguson tomorrow to supervise the federal investigation of the fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old, Michael Brown, by a white police officer, Darren Wilson, 10 days ago. Tonight, Ferguson city leaders have urged protesters to stay home to "allow peace to settle in." Brown's funeral is scheduled for Monday.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The intelligence community is trying to determine the authenticity of a video that purports to show the execution of an American journalist, James Foley, by an Islamic State group militant. Foley is a freelancer from Rochester, New Hampshire, who's been missing in Syria for nearly two years. The White House, his family and employer were attempting to confirm whether he had been killed.
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — A burst of violence between Hamas and Israel has left Egyptian mediation efforts in tatters. Heavy fighting has raised the likelihood of a new round in a war that has already claimed more than 2,000 lives, most of them Palestinians. Gaza militants fired several rockets into Israel, which, in turn, resumed its campaign of airstrikes. At least three Palestinians were killed today, including a 2-year-old girl.
MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — A Liberian slum that's home to at least 50,000 people is under quarantine and a curfew tonight as the West African country battles to stop the spread of Ebola in the capital of Monrovia. Angry residents of the slum attacked an Ebola observation center over the weekend. Looters made off with items that could further spread the virus. Liberia has the fastest rising number of cases in West Africa.
PHOENIX (AP) — A river of muddy water rushed down I-17 about 25 miles north of Phoenix today, as heavy monsoon season rains dumped as much as 8-inches of rain in some of Arizona's mountainous regions. The rains resulted in dramatic rescues, closed roads and delayed flights. Authorities pulled one elderly woman from a van stuck in rushing floodwaters, one of many rescues throughout the day as motorists became trapped while driving through typically dry desert washes.
