FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Police have been trying to clear the streets in Ferguson, Missouri, where there's been another night of protests following the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer. On Monday night, police used bullhorns, noisemakers and armored vehicles to push back the crowd. In one confrontation, officers fired tear gas and flash grenades. The latest clashes came after a pathologist hired by the teen's family said 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot six times, including twice in the head.
MARIPOSA, Calif. (AP) — People in some 13,000 homes and businesses in Central California's Madera County have been told to get out, as a 500-acre wildfire threatens the area. Evacuation orders also have been issued to four hotels about 16 miles away, in the community of Oakhurst. The blaze is burning out of control near Yosemite National Park.
BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces are stepping up their campaign against militant strongholds in Syria, carrying out dozens of airstrikes against the headquarters of the group Islamic State in the past two days. Islamic State fighters have been closing in on the last government-held army base in the northeastern Raqqa province. And the group's rapid march on towns and villages in northern and eastern Syria is now threatening to overturn recent gains by Syrian government forces.
PATNA, India (AP) — Twenty-one people are dead after a passenger train struck a crowded rickshaw in eastern India. Railway police say the crossing gate was open and the rickshaw was crossing the track when the train hit, dragging it some 500 yards. Among the dead are seven children and six women.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The second largest school district in the United States is making major reforms in how it deals with students who commit low-level offenses. The Los Angeles Unified School District will announce Tuesday that students caught fighting or possessing marijuana or alcohol will receive interventions by a guidance counselor or school administrator instead of being handed over to local authorities.
