WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is sending Attorney General Eric Holder to Ferguson, Missouri, to meet with federal law enforcement officials investigating the police shooting of an unarmed black 18-year-old. Holder recently authorized a federal autopsy on the body of Michael Brown. Independent autopsy results determined that Brown was shot at least six times, including twice in the head. The St. Louis County medical examiner's office says its autopsy also show Brown was shot at least six times.

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has lifted the curfew on the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, but he's also sent in the National Guard to help restore order. The city has been the scene of protests since the shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer nine days ago. Police arrested two men today for disorderly conduct and failure to disperse after telling told protesters they couldn't assemble in a single spot and needed to keep moving.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says Iraqi and Kurdish forces have taken a "major step forward" in the battle against Islamic State group militants by recapturing the Mosul Dam in northern Iraq. Speaking at the White House this afternoon, Obama said that if the dam on the Tigris River had been breached it could have had catastrophic consequences, including endangering American Embassy personnel in Baghdad.

CAIRO (AP) — The Egyptian government has announced a 24-hour extension in cease-fire talks between Israel and the Hamas militant group. The announcement came less than an hour before a temporary truce was set to expire in the Gaza war. Egypt says a deal has not been reached, but talks on a long-term arrangement in the Palestinian territory will continue.

NEW YORK (AP) — A bidding contest for a discount Family Dollar retailer is one of the factors that helped send stocks to strong gains today. Dollar General jumped 12 percent after the company made a $9.7 billion offer to buy Family Dollar, topping a bid from rival Dollar Tree by more than $1 billion. The S&P 500 rose 16 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,971, while the Dow added 175 points, nearly 1.1 percent, to close at 16,838. The Nasdaq composite gained 43 points, or 1 percent, to 4,508.
