FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Some protesters in Ferguson, Missouri defied a midnight curfew today and got smoke canisters and some tear gas for their trouble. Hundreds of other demonstrators observed the curfew, leaving before midnight in the St. Louis suburb where an unarmed black teen had been shot and killed by a white police officer.

CANTON, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities in northern New York say a couple charged in the kidnapping of two young Amish sisters "were looking for opportunities to victimize" other children. Police say the Amish girls were sexually abused before the couple released them. The suspects are being held without bail pending a hearing Thursday.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A road accident in northwestern Afghanistan has killed 32 people. Officials say a truck loaded with people and animals crashed in a mountainous rural area. Afghan roads are not well-maintained and safe driving practices are not always followed.

CAIRO (AP) — Both sides have returned to Cairo to continue peace talks over the Gaza war. But a Palestinian negotiator says his side is "less optimistic" about indirect talks with Israel as a deadline on a temporary cease-fire looms. The cease-fire is due to end late tomorrow.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The federal government is taking the unusual step of beginning to sterilize an endangered species it is trying to save. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service officials say they have to curb the backyard breeding of desert tortoises because the growing population of unwanted pet tortoises diverts resources from efforts to preserve the species in the wild. Captive tortoises threaten native populations because they can carry diseases with them when they escape or are released illegally.
