BAGHDAD (AP) — A United Nations declaration of a humanitarian crisis is expected to trigger additional goods, funds and assets to respond to the needs of people displaced by fighting in Iraq. The world body declared its highest level of humanitarian emergency amid an onslaught by the Islamic State group. Officials say a woman and four children have died in the latest clashes between militants and Iraqi troops. Ten militants have also died.
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — A U.S. general killed in Afghanistan is scheduled for burial today at Arlington National Cemetery. Maj. Gen. Harold J. Greene is the highest-ranking U.S. military officer to be killed in America's post-9/11 wars. Greene was shot by a man believed to be an Afghan soldier.
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Europe's shaky economic recovery hit the skids in the second quarter. Officials say fears over the crisis in Ukraine and softer trade and investment had a lot to do with it. Growth in the 18-country Eurozone was flat, thanks to a decline in Germany and zero growth in France.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Pope Francis is calling for peace between the Koreas. He's in South Korea today and called on both sides to avoid "fruitless" criticisms and shows of force. As the pontiff delivered a message of reconciliation, North Korea fired five projectiles into the sea.
NORTH BABYLON, N.Y. (AP) — A round-the-clock recovery continues on Long Island after massive rains. A record 13.26 inches of rain fell between midnight and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Communities across the U.S. are drying out after unusually heavy rains swamped highways, flooded basements and were blamed for at least four deaths.
