BAGHDAD (AP) — A senior Kurdish military official says his forces have retaken two towns from the Sunni militants that have seized large parts of northern Iraq. A general says Kurdish fighters were able to push the militants of the Islamic State group out of two villages in Nineveh province. It's the first victory by the Kurdish forces, which until now have been in retreat.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Defense Department says the U.S. has carried out a fourth round of airstrikes targeting Islamic militants in northern Iraq. U.S. Central Command says overnight strikes by U.S. fighter jets and unmanned drones destroyed a mortar position and armed vehicles, including one that was firing on Kurdish forces near the city of Irbil (ur-BEEL').
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say the black teenager who was shot and killed by police in suburban St. Louis yesterday was unarmed. Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson tells The Associated Press that the 18-year-old man who was killed did not have a gun. Jackson says police are in contact with a second person who was involved in an altercation with the officer before the shooting, but that the person has not been arrested or charged.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Missionaries returning to the United States after working with Ebola patients in Africa will be put in quarantine and monitored. The missionaries are with North Carolina-based SIM USA. The charity says none are sick or have shown any signs of having Ebola, but they want to be as cautious as possible. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services says the quarantine will last at least three weeks since the missionaries were last exposed to people infected with the Ebola virus.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" have claimed the top spot at the box office this weekend. The Paramount comic-book adaptation featuring Megan Fox alongside computer-generated renditions of the pizza-eating, sewer-dwelling superheroes opened with an estimated $65 million. Marvel's cosmic romp "Guardians of the Galaxy" slid into second place in its second weekend. The Warner Bros. disaster film "Into the Storm" is No. 3.
