DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — Fighting is raging in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk. A city official says one person has been killed and 10 injured in shelling that started early this morning. The violence comes one day after pro-Russian rebels said they were ready to agree to a cease-fire in order to prevent a "humanitarian catastrophe."
CAIRO (AP) — Israel's defense minister warns: "If Hamas thinks it has worn us down, it is wrong." Israel continues to respond to militant rocket fire from Gaza with airstrikes today. Meanwhile, Palestinian negotiators are threatening to quit truce talks in Egypt unless Israeli negotiators return to Cairo. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says, "Israel will not negotiate under fire."
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — It now appears there may have been survivors in the crash of a regional passenger plane in Iran's capital. An Iranian transportation official says 39 people were killed and nine injured in the crash. The plane went down shortly after taking off from a Tehran airport on a domestic flight this morning.
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — An NAACP chapter in St. Louis is calling for the FBI to look into the fatal shooting of a black teenager by police in a predominantly black suburb a few miles north of downtown yesterday. The killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown sent hundreds of angry residents out of their apartments in Ferguson. The St. Louis County Police Department is investigating the shooting at the request of the local department. It confirms that a Ferguson police officer shot the man, but hasn't given a reason for the shooting.
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (AP) — NASCAR driver Tony Stewart's racing team is calling it a "tragic accident." The three-time champion struck and killed a sprint car driver during a dirt-track race in upstate New York last night. Witnesses say Kevin Ward Jr. had climbed from his car and was on the track trying to confront Stewart when the rear of Stewart's car hit him.
