DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — A top separatist leader says the largest rebel-held city in Ukraine is surrounded by Ukrainian troops, and his forces are willing to accept a cease-fire in order to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe. There's been no government response yet to the statement from the so-called prime minister of the separatists in Donetsk (dah-NETSK'). Russia has called for a humanitarian mission into eastern Ukraine, but Kiev and the West suggest that could be just a pretext to send in Russian forces.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says efforts continue to airdrop food and water to persecuted religious minorities stranded on a mountaintop in Iraq. And he says plans are being made for how to get them down. But Obama says stopping the rapid advance of Islamic State militants in northern Iraq is likely to be "a long-term project."
LAYTONVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Officials say eight firefighters have suffered burns while battling a wildfire in Northern California. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says three firefighters from Santa Clara County and five inmate firefighters were burned fighting a blaze in Mendocino County last night. They were airlifted to the burn center at the University of California, Davis, for treatment and released this morning.
DENVILLE, N.J. (AP) — Authorities in New Jersey say a member of Gov. Chris Christie's transition team has been killed in a murder-suicide. They say Joan Bramhall was shot to death by her husband, who then took his own life. The 74-year-old former Morris County clerk was well-known in Republican political circles. A daughter says the couple had been under "enormous stress" in recent weeks and that John Bramhall believed his wife of 54 years was suffering from dementia.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Police are investigating a shooting at a downtown Minneapolis nightclub that injured as many as seven people, including a Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle. The Vikings say Linval Joseph was shot in the calf. He was treated for a minor injury and released. Two people were seriously injured but are expected to survive.
