LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County has recorded its first two cases of the year of the mosquito-borne West Nile virus.
County health officials said Thursday that two people were infected in July.
Officials say a woman in her 60s from the San Fernando Valley continues to recover at a hospital. The second case involved a man in his 20s who was infected but showed no symptoms. He lives in southern Los Angeles County and is healthy.
The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/1srOtWY) that in 2013, 165 human cases of West Nile were reported in the county, one of the highest counts documented since 2004.
On Wednesday state health officials said two people in Northern California have died from West Nile — the first deaths of the year from the virus.
It is transmitted to humans and animals by infected mosquitoes.
