MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) — Morehead State University has been awarded a $500,000 grant to promote dental health in the region.
U.S. Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers' office says the grant comes from the Appalachian Regional Commission. The money will be used to continue the Appalachian Rural Dental Education Partnership Program with the University of Kentucky's College of Dentistry.
Rogers says the program promotes dental careers in eastern Kentucky and extends outreach into schools to raise awareness about good oral health.
The state supported the project with a 22 percent match.
Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson says the state has set a goal of a 25 percent reduction in children going untreated for dental decay.
The grant announcement came during the wrap up of a three-day series of community meetings to discuss health care in eastern Kentucky.
