SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Prosecutors have filed a prostitution charge against a man appointed by a judge to oversee a polygamous trust in Warren Jeffs' sect on the Utah-Arizona border. The Salt Lake Tribune reports accountant Bruce Wisan pleaded not guilty today to one charge of patronizing a prostitute in the city of Taylorsville. Wisan's attorney declined to comment.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Animal welfare activists will be in court today to argue against a Utah law that criminalizes undercover investigations of livestock operations. The lawsuit is the first in the country to challenge so-called ag-gag laws that activists say are designed silence them. State attorneys argue the judge should throw out the Utah case because the activists don't face an immediate threat of prosecution.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Consumer spending increased faster in Utah in 2012 than all but three other states. A new annual government report issued today shows personal spending by Utah residents increased 4 percent from 2011 to 2012. Only North Dakota, Texas and Oklahoma notched faster growth. Utah residents spent an average of about $30,200 in 2012.
GRANGEVILLE, Idaho (AP) — Two Utah men have died in a small plane crash in north-central Idaho. The Idaho County Sheriff's Office says 57-year-old pilot David Fitzgerald and 61-year-old Randy Butters died when their two-seat, single-engine experimental craft went down in a remote area near Yellow Pine. The bodies were recovered yesterday and taken to a funeral home in Grangeville.
