SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The state of Utah is formally asking the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold its ban on gay marriage. Utah officials announced last month it would take its case straight to the high court rather than asking for a review from the appeals court. Utah is the first state to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review a gay marriage ban since justices last year struck down part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah businessman at the center of a scandal that led to the arrest of two former state attorneys general is headed to trial on fraud charges. Jeremy Johnson is accused in a $350 million scheme that billed people for products they never ordered. County prosecutors say former top lawmen John Swallow and Mark Shurtleff accepted gifts from Johnson, including use of his private jet and luxury houseboat.

HELPER, Utah (AP) — The governor's office says about 100 homes are damaged in Carbon County after a severe thunderstorm flooded the area Monday night. The Utah Red Cross says workers were preparing yesterday to serve dinner to up to 200 people affected by the flooding. The sheriff's office reported homes in the cities of Helper, Spring Glen and Carbonville were damaged.

TORREY, Utah (AP) — Today marks the third stage of the Tour of Utah, which will take riders 118 miles before finishing in Tooele. Michael Schar of BMC Racing Team survived a six-man breakaway over Boulder Mountain and then time-trialed to victory yesterday in the second stage.
