SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The state of Utah is formally asking the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold its ban on gay marriage. A federal appeals court in Denver ruled in June that states cannot deny same-sex couples the fundamental right to marry. The ruling upheld a December decision by a federal judge overturning the state ban. Attorney General Sean Reyes said he hopes the case is resolved quickly.
NORTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) — North Salt Lake officials say more than 20 homes have been evacuated following an early morning landslide that destroyed one hillside home. A city engineer said one house remains in immediate danger if it rains tonight. Nobody has been injured. City manager Barry Edwards says nobody expected the major rainstorm that fell overnight, but he says the city sent homeowners a letter this week recommending that they protect their valuables.
HELPER, Utah (AP) — The governor's office says about 100 homes are damaged in Carbon County after a severe thunderstorm flooded the area last night. Gov. Gary Herbert says state officials are working with local municipalities in the affected areas. County road crews are providing hundreds of sandbags for people affected by the waters.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a fiery car crash that killed a 26-year-old woman will serve up to 10 years in prison. Police say 38-year-old Shane Gillette had been smoking marijuana before he crashed into a car waiting at an intersection in January 2011.
