NEW YORK (AP) — The stock market has fallen to its lowest point since May as traders worry that tensions between Russia and Ukraine could flare up. Energy stocks were among the biggest decliners today. Halliburton and Devon Energy each fell 3 percent. The Dow lost 139 points. It was down almost 200 points in early afternoon trading. The S&P fell 18 points while the Nasdaq lost 31. Target fell 4 percent after the company lowered its second-quarter earnings forecast, citing discounts it had to use to attract shoppers.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Pentagon isn't yet releasing the name of the two-star U.S. Army general who was killed today in Afghanistan in an attack by a gunman dressed as an Afghan soldier. About 15 other members of U.S. and coalition forces were wounded, including a German general and two Afghan generals. The American becomes the highest-ranking U.S. officer killed in combat in either of the nation's post-9/11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — It will now be up to Egyptian mediators to try to bridge the wide differences between Israeli and Palestinian delegations who've gone to Cairo to try to find a path toward peace in the Gaza Strip. For now, there's a temporary cease-fire in place, and Israel says it has pulled the last of its ground forces out of Gaza. Any cease-fire violation could quickly derail the talks in Cairo.
MONTICELLO, Ind. (AP) — A northern Indiana sheriff says three people are dead following a shooting outside a furniture plant. The sheriff tells a TV station (WLFI) that two men died at the scene, while a woman was pronounced dead at a hospital. He says detectives found a handgun at the shooting scene at Jordan Manufacturing in the city of Monticello (mahn-tuh-SEL'-oh), about 70 miles northwest of Indianapolis.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A Missouri man is set to become the first U.S. inmate to be put to death since a lengthy lethal injection last month in Arizona. Michael Worthington has filed last-minute appeals today to the U.S. Supreme Court, and he has asked Missouri's governor for clemency. Worthington raped and strangled a college student in 1995. His lawyers are calling into question the Arizona execution and two others that were botched in Ohio and Oklahoma.
