JERUSALEM (AP) — A three-day cease-fire between Israel and Hamas has taken effect in the Gaza Strip. The truce was agreed to by both sides in the month-long war. It started at 8 a.m. local time, or 1 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday. During that time, Israel and Hamas are to hold indirect talks in Cairo on a broader deal that would prevent future cross-border violence. The war has claimed nearly 1,900 Palestinian lives — most of them civilians. And 67 Israelis have been killed, all but three of them soldiers.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says its plan was to have all of its ground troops pulled out of Gaza by the start of the three-day cease-fire, which has begun. A military official says Israel has completed the destruction of 32 cross-border tunnels meant to allow Islamic militants to carry out attacks against Israel.

KUNMING, China (AP) — Rescuers in southern China are racing to evacuate villages near rising lakes formed by landslides. The latest crisis is complicating relief efforts following a strong earthquake that killed at least 398 people and has left thousands homeless. Rescue teams have freed scores of trapped survivors as they dig through the thousands of homes that collapsed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A new analysis says the rising wealth gap in the United States is complicating the rebound from the recession. The rating agency Standard & Poor's says the widening gap has made the economy more prone to boom-bust cycles. And in part because of the disparity, the economy is estimated to grow at a 2.5 percent annual pace in the next decade, down from a forecast five years ago of a 2.8 percent.

DORSET, Minn. (AP) — Robert "Bobby" Tufts run as mayor of Dorset, Minnesota is over. The 5-year-old has been bumped by 16-year-old Eric Mueller, whose name was drawn from the ballot box during the annual Taste of Dorset festival. Bobby was only 3 when he was first elected mayor of Dorset in 2012. Dorset has a population of no more than 28 people and it has no formal city government. People pay $1 to cast one vote for mayor and they can vote as many times as they want.
