RENO, Nev. (AP) — A federal judge in Reno has seated a jury to hear competing lawsuits between Amtrak, Union Pacific Railroad and a Nevada trucking firm over a train-truck crash that killed six people 70 miles east of Reno three years ago.
Judge Howard McKibben told the three-man, seven-woman jury Monday that the trial will begin promptly at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday. He expects it to stretch into September.
Amtrak and Union Pacific Railroad have accused John Davis Trucking of Battle Mountain of negligence in its hiring and oversight of the truck driver killed in the crash in June 2011.
The trucking firm in turn is accuses the two rail companies of failing to provide a proper signal warning at the grade crossing on U.S. 95. Five Amtrak passengers died in the fiery crash.
