FRESNO, Calif- Four Salt Lake pitchers combined on a six hit shutout, as the Bees blanked the Fresno Grizzlies 7-0 on Sunday night. Starter Randy Wolf threw a lot of pitches early and went just three and one-third innings and allowed four hits. Kurt Spomer, who was just promoted from class-A Inland Empire, worked two and two-third innings and gave up just two hits.
Spomer exited in the seventh with the bases loaded and no outs, but Yoslan Herrera would retire the next three Fresno batters to strand the three baserunners. Herrera (3-4) would set down all six batters he faced to earn the victory. Ryan Chaffee closed out the game with a three up, three down ninth to procure the fourth shutout of the season for the Salt Lake pitching staff.
Starter Randy Wolf threw a lot of pitches early and went just three and one-third innings and allowed four hits.
The Bees took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, as Collin Cowgill led off with a double. Shawn O'Malley laid down a bunt up the third base line for a single with Grizzlies third baseman Tony Abreu throwing the ball down into the right field bullpen to score Cowgill. O'Malley would advance to third on the throw and then came home when right fielder Gary Brown threw the ball away. Salt Lake would add one more run in the fifth when Tommy Field tripled to center and scored on a single to left by John Hester.
The Bees would add one more run in the eighth and capped off the night with three more runs in the ninth. Offensively, O'Malley led the Bees with three hits, including a two run triple, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Luis Jimenez delivered a pair of doubles and one RBI, while Hester added two hits and one RBI.
