CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Supporters of an initiative petition to expand background checks to nearly all gun sales in Nevada will soon begin gathering signatures after claiming a court victory. Carson District Judge James Wilson on Friday struck down most of the arguments of the Nevada Firearms Coalition over the wording of the petition. The group opposes the petition. Wilson ordered a minor wording change noting there would be criminal penalties for failure to obey the proposed new law, but rejected other wording changes sought by the firearms coalition.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A federal appeals court has denied a bid by former Nevada developer and power broker Harvey Whittemore to stay out of prison while he appeals his campaign finance conviction. Nevada U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman Natalie Collins says Friday's ruling means Whittemore must surrender to a federal prison on Wednesday to begin serving a two-year sentence for making illegal contributions to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A judge has ordered a mental health evaluation for a Kansas felon accused of robbing the Bellagio hotel-casino in Las Vegas of $43,500. During Friday's hearing, 34-year-old Scott Carmitchel refused to speak as he sat in a wheelchair. His hands and feet were shackled, and he wore a mask to prevent him from spitting at anyone. His court-appointed attorney told U.S. Magistrate Judge Peggy Leen that Carmitchel is even refusing to speak to her. Leen says a mental evaluation is needed to determine whether Carmitchel is competent to stand trial.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police are searching for a motorist involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed two pedestrians from Georgia near the Rio Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas. Investigators say a 71-year-old man and 74-year-old woman, both from Kennesaw, Georgia, were trying to cross a street when they were struck by a car late Friday. Police say they were not in a crosswalk at the time, and were pronounced dead at the scene.
