SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An independent civilian review board has cleared a Salt Lake City officer in the fatal shooting of a dog in its own fenced backyard. Police Chief Chris Burbank announced Friday that the panel found Detective Brett Olsen "acted within policy" when he shot the dog during a search for a missing 3-year-old boy on June 18. The shooting prompted protests and hundreds of emails demanding Olsen's termination.
OREM, Utah (AP) — An Orem woman was arrested after police said her 3-year-old daughter tested positive for methamphetamine. Police say they received a call early Thursday from Orem Community Hospital about a woman who brought her daughter there and said the child had hit her head while playing on a trampoline. Provo's Daily Herald reports a doctor told police the girl tested positive for meth and showed signs of meth impairment.
CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) — A 41-year-old man has been ordered to stand trial on charges he shot and injured an Iron County sheriff's deputy last December. Fifth District Judge John Walton on Wednesday ruled there was sufficient evidence to try Grant Biedermann on two felony charges of attempted aggravated murder and a misdemeanor count of carrying a dangerous weapon while under the influence. Biedermann is accused of opening fire after Deputy Kellen Hudson and two other deputies responded to the Red Lodge Campground in Kanarraville on a report of a suicidal man.
VERNAL, Utah (AP) — A 41-year-old man has been charged with throwing his girlfriend and her pet raccoon against a wall during a domestic dispute in Uintah County. David Tapia was charged Friday in 8th District Court with felony assault and misdemeanor animal cruelty. According to charging documents, the two began arguing after Tapia called her by his ex-wife's name in their Ballard home on July 14, and he then threw her against a wall.
