DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Mahalo Princess held off 8-5 favorite Upbeat Mood by a head to win the $77,000 feature at Del Mar on Thursday.

Ridden by Kayla Stra, Mahalo Princess ran five furlongs on the turf in 56.85 seconds and paid $30.60, $10.60 and $5 at 14-1 odds.

Upbeat Mood returned $3 and $2.60, denying jockey Tyler Baze his 2,000th career victory. Lemon de Oro was another half-length back in third and paid $2.80 to show.

The race was marred by an injury to Serious, who was pulled up on the far turn by jockey Francisco Duran. The 4-year-old filly sustained injuries to her left front leg. Nine horses have died since the summer meet began on July 16, including four during races on the new turf course.
