SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WHDH) — A Somerville, Massachusetts woman is cashing in after a cruel crime, and it's all thanks to the police department.

Officers and civilian workers at the Somerville Police Department collected $1,800 for a victim of a brazen crime. The elderly woman was robbed of her Social Security money at a supermarket.

"I immediately responded to Shaw's and found an elderly woman standing there crying, extremely distraught," Detective Katie McDaid said.

It all happened at this store on July 4th. Somerville police say a man walked in, saw the woman counting $710 then grabbed the money and ran. Bystanders chased after him but he got away.
