MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Arthur is now a Category 2 hurricane as it moves toward North Carolina's Outer Banks. The storm is packing winds of 100 mph. Forecasters say little additional change in strength is expected overnight and tomorrow. Arthur is expected to begin weakening tomorrow night as it marches northward It's now about 110 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa and cities along the Iowa River are installing flood barriers. They're worried a key reservoir could overflow and inundate the area next week. Officials say flood damage will be limited if water doesn't rise above the spillway but they say upcoming rainfall could be a problem. The spillway was breached during devastating floods in 2008 and 1993.
NEW YORK (AP) — A string of records for the Dow Jones industrial average is lifting portfolios in a five-year bull market for stocks. The Dow has topped 17,000 for the first time. The index closed at 17,068 today. The 92-point gain pushed the Dow past its first 1,000-point milestone this year. The record came after another positive jobs report capped a week of good news for the U.S. economy.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A jury that's deadlocked over whether to find the Dodgers negligent in the savage beating of a Giants fan in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium in 2011 must return to work Monday. Jurors failed to reach a verdict again today. Bryan Stow, who was severely brain damaged, contends the team failed to provide adequate security. Two Dodger fans pleaded guilty in the attack.
NEW YORK (AP) — The competitors in the annual Fourth of July hot dog eating contest at New York's Coney Island are ready. The top four contestants weighed in today. Male champion Joey Chestnut was 205 pounds. He wants to beat last year's second-place finisher, 130-pound Matt Stonie. The female champion Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas will try to defend her title. In all, 13 women and 17 men will compete.
