LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — The Payette National Forest has rescinded a gold mining exploration permit in the headwaters of the South Fork of the Salmon River. The three-year permit would have allowed Midas Gold Corp. of Vancouver, British Columbia, to drill about 178 exploratory holes east of McCall. Forest officials decided last week that additional environmental analysis of the company's plans and their potential environmental effects is needed.
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — A U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in eastern Idaho that is being sued by environmental groups could close. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack informed Congress of the decision to shut down the facility north of Dubois on Nov. 3. Vilsack there aren't enough scientists available to do high priority research because of declining budgets. Republican Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter says he will resist the closure.
WILSALL, Mont. (AP) — The 12,600-year-old remains of a boy have been reburied in a Native American ceremony in Montana. Representatives of American Indian tribes conducted the ceremony yesterday for the boy, who was between 1 year and 18 months old. His remains were found in 1968.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Despite overall numbers in the tens of thousands, mustang advocates say the wild horse is on the verge of going extinct in North America and deserves protection under the Endangered Species Act. Two groups in a petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service say growing threats from development, livestock grazing and government are jeopardizing the genetic viability of individual herds in 10 states from California to Montana.
