Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce President Lane Beattie hit the proverbial nail on the head the other day while launching a drive to create a new planning vision for Utah's capital city:
"While there are lots of downtowns in Utah, there is only one downtown that is everybody's downtown."
Indeed, every Utahn has a vested interest in the future of downtown Salt Lake City. It is the state's business, political and cultural center. To a large extent, what occurs in the downtown area drives the economy of the state. Quite literally, it is the "crossroads of the west."
It is why KSL encourages every Utahn, not just those who live or work within the capital city, to take a keen interest in the Salt Lake Chamber's "Downtown Rising" planning effort. In coming weeks and months, input is being sought on what the Salt Lake City of the future should be.
A similar effort 40 years ago led to such current mainstays as the Salt Palace Convention Center, Abravanel Hall, and the Main Street Plaza. Even TRAX!
Just as then, KSL believes the new planning endeavor has the potential to result in a progressively vibrant downtown. The process warrants widespread participation by citizens from every part of Utah.
