BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi troops are taking the offensive against Sunni militants who have gobbled up territory in northern Iraq. Troops backed by helicopter gunships launched an operation early Saturday aimed at dislodging Sunni militants from the northern city of Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's birthplace and one of two major urban centers Sunnis seized in recent weeks.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The conclusions of a review ordered by President Barack Obama haven't been kind to the Department of Veterans Affairs and the health care system for vets. The report cites "significant and chronic system failures" and a corrosive culture of distrust in the nation's health system for veterans. It says the Veterans Health Administration must be fundamentally restructured.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama uses his weekly media message to defend taking executive actions to enact parts of his economic agenda. He says he's moved alone to attract jobs, raise workers' wages and help students pay off loans because Republican obstructionism is keeping the system rigged against the middle class. In the Republican address, Louisiana Rep. Bill Cassidy pushes growing the U.S. energy, manufacturing and construction industries to create jobs.

GAUHATI, India (AP) — Authorities are rushing food and drinking water to thousands of people marooned by monsoon rains and mudslides that have left at least 11 dead in India's remote northeast. Residents waded through waist- and knee-deep water in several parts of the state capital, Gauhati. And loose patches of earth rolled down the hills around Gauhati today as a light rain continued.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — NASA's "flying saucer" may get its test drop today after several weather delays. NASA is working on technology to land heavier payloads on Mars and needs a much stronger parachute. The attempt off the coast of the Hawaiian island of Kauai will test the disc-shaped vehicle and a giant parachute.
