Ashley Hayes ReportingA brush fire near St. George burned out of control this past weekend. It destroyed homes and displaced families in the town of Veyo.
Most of those families are safe and back home now. But at one point on Sunday, 30 families were evacuated.
The fire destroyed two homes and damaged six buildings, including a few garages, cars and a greenhouse. Two minor injuries were reported.
The fire started around 1 p.m. Sunday near the Santa Clara River.
Several agencies were involved in fighting the fire. In addition to crews on the ground, the Bureau of Land Management flew air tankers to combat the blaze.
Evacuated residents stayed at the Veyo chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while firefighters fought to save their homes. Firefighters contained the fire Sunday night and residents whose houses weren't damaged returned to them.
Investigators believe a person or persons somehow caused the fire and are looking into the exact cause.
Once again, there were a couple of injuries from that fire. Several houses burned, but this morning the fire is contained and most of the families effected are back in their homes, with the exception of the folks whose homes burned down.
Elsewhere, firefighters have begun trying to contain the Annabella fire near Richfield. The lightning-caused blaze in the Fishlake National Forest has burned more than 660 acres since Wednesday.
